If you need to downsize for some reason, and you need to move your items into a storage unit, there are a few golden rules you should follow as you prepare your items for storage. Following these golden rules will help turn your storage unit into a more functional place for your storage needs.

Golden Rule #1: Get All Your Packing Supplies Together First

Before you start packing up your items for the storage unit, get your items together first. It is a lot easier to pack when you have all of your supplies purchased and together, and you don't have to stop your positive momentum to go and pick up packing supplies.

You are going to need various size boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, colored labels, thick pens or markers, scissors, and lots of packing tape. You may also need blankets, towels, and other soft clothes to wrap up your belongings.

Golden Rule #2: Clean Everything First

Before you start packing things up, make sure everything is clean. That means washing all your clothing, towels, drapes, and anything else that is cloth. That means wiping things down to remove built-up dust and grime.

You don't want to bring any food particles into your storage unit. Also, cleaner goods tend to come out of storage smelling and looking better, so take the time to clean anything you are considering putting into your storage unit.

Golden Rule #3: Sort Before Packing

Next, you pay for every square foot of that storage unit, and you don't want to fill it up with things that you are not really using or don't really want.

Before you pack up your items, take some time to go through them, and make sure you are only packing up things you really want. Donate, sell, recycle, or throw away items you don't want to pay for the privilege of keeping.

Golden Rule #4: Label Everything

Finally, make sure you label everything. Even better, use a system for labeling everything. Use a different color label for items that belong to a different part of your home or for different types of items, such as clothing, music supplies, and kitchen appliances.

Detailed labels will make it easier to find items you need when you have to pull something out of your storage unit.
